World Book Day Deals And New Biodegradable Comic Release!

So, it's World Book Day in the UK this week, and to celebrate I have made the Kindle version of Grynbad And The Seven Soups free to download for this weekend only, in all countries!

Treat yourself to some fun soup-related pirate hijinks here.

Also, as part of a UK-only deal, The Last Of The Navel Navigators is available for just 99p as part of a Kindle Countdown Deal for the weekend (and Amazon have even seen fit to temporarily reduce the price of the paperback).

For all your hillbilly bellybutton needs, click here.

And in other news, I've finally released print versions of the 100% Biodegradable Collection 1 and 2 on Amazon (with more to follow in the future). The first collection went straight to number 1 of the Amazon Best Sellers chart 'Cult Graphic Novels' category, so it's worth buying for just £6.99 whilst it's cheap.

Both collections feature 25 self-contained strips from an amazing selection of creators, including the likes of Dan Cornwell, Alan Burrows, Brett Burbridge, Tony Suleri and many more.  You can buy them at the following links:

And who better to kick off the carnage-fest than Alan ruddy Grant himself, alongside Alan ruddy Burrows, with their legendary 'Funguys'.  Watch them gatecrash the Last Supper, with sobering consequences! (based on a true story, no doubt)

An alcoholic orc and his overweight companion attempt to tap into the unexplored market of Beer Beards in 'Rubbernorc: Vital Delivery' by Paul Eldridge, Brett Burbridge and Ken Reynolds.

Up against a deadly alien peril, the crew of the Skow unleash the full might of their secret Scottish weapon in 'Skowdogs' by John Freeman, David Hailwood, Dave Thomson and Ken Reynolds.
On a vastly overpopulated earth, two government agents attempt to keep the population in check and rack up a hefty kill bonus in 'Supply and Demand' by David Hailwood and Tony Suleri.

An android underdog bites off more than he can chew in 'Rumblebot Rampage' by Tim West and Edward R. Norden.

A security operative on the late shift begins to suspect strange things are afoot in 'Elevator' by Tomek Kontny and Mikolaj Ratka.

The Last Of The Navel Navigators is out now!

Once upon a time, there was a mad-eyed tea drinking Englishman who wrote down some crazy, feverish scribblings involving a young hillbilly with a magic bellybutton, who travels the universe with his goat, Brian.
Those very same scribblings were awarded a distinction at the university of Chichester, as part of a creative writing MA, which goes to show that even distinguished lecturers love a stinky old goat (and wizards. Let's not forget the overweight wizard whose beard is infested with pixies!)

Anyway, that same aforementioned mad-eyed tea drinking Englishman (with a rather dashing beard - no pixies in this one!) has finally managed to wrangle all the scribblings together into the form of a children's book, which goes by the title: 'The Last Of The Navel Navigators'. It is now available to buy (in print, and digital) on Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, iBooks, Nook and a few other places. You can even read a short sample taken from the first two chapters on some of those sites.

Here's the blurb...

"Discovered in a swamp and raised by hillbillies, Jellybean 'Gator Bait' Skratcher soon learns he has the astounding ability to open portals to other worlds, using his bellybutton.

He sets out on an epic adventure across a hostile universe, led by a scatterbrained stork who's made it his mission in life to deliver Jellybean to the right parents, or die trying.

But when your best friend's a goat, and your greatest hope for survival relies solely upon a talentless magician who can only do card tricks, nothing is likely to go as planned!" So, dust off your pyjamas, grab yourself a goat, and get poking that bellybutton! It's time to embark upon the ultimate hillbilly bellybutton odyssey!

Navel Navigators Covered by Brett

Here's a peek at the three stages of artwork that went into the front cover design for the upcoming 'The Last Of The Navel Navigators' children's novel (in which a young boy with a magic bellybutton sets off on a madcap journey across the universe, without having a clue what he's doing, where he's going or how to get back).

Artwork by the ever brilliant Brett Burbridge.

Death Duty is out now!

Death Duty: Renegade from 100% Biodegradable - On Sale Now!

Death Duty: Renegade is available now in digital or print from DriveThru Comics http://www.drivethrucomics.com/product/226483/Death-Duty-Renegade.

In a war-torn future, crime and disloyalty to the Terran Empire are punished with conscription into mercenary law enforcement squads: soldiers consigned to do or die in order to prove their commitment to the common good.

Those who serve out a full year are entitled to a bonus and financial rewards for their work – and even the opportunity of early amnesty.

Of course, very few survive what is known as DEATH DUTY: the average life expectancy for a recruit is four months…in some cases, much less!

Dissidents in the Terran Empire are put on the infamous List – tracked down by Death Duty squads and terminated for their rebellion with extreme prejudice.

Described by some as ruthless assassins working with the worst of intentions, Dutymen - and women - see themselves as simply being paid to kill to keep the Empire safe. For most of them, exactly who they kill doesn’t matter – until one of their number, Travis Wilson, begins to question the missions they’re assigned and goes AWOL...a wanted man.

Death Duty: Renegade, the first in a trilogy of stories starring Travis Wilson and Rourke (Rourke created by John Freeman and Liam Sharp) is written by John Freeman (Doctor Who, Judge Dredd Megazine, Black Ops Extreme) with David Hailwood (100% Biodegradable, TOXIC), drawn by Brett Burbridge (Octal, 100% Biodegradable) and lettered by Ken Reynolds (Cognition, Sliced Quarterly)

DEATH DUTY: RENEGADE collects the first full length Death Duty strip first published in 100% Biodegradable, and includes the “lost” first episode planned for an unpublished WarWorldz anthology comic, drawn by Alan Burrows (Dan Dare, Commando).

Edited by Dave Hailwood, the Death Duty: Renegade collection is published by Crucible Press, a new comic imprint established by the team behind the comics website downthetubes.net, in partnership with Biomekazoik Press.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID:

“ A ripping yarn that’s hitting all the right beats”
- A Place to Hang Your Cape

"Death Duty has a real throwback feel to it, like a cross between David Lloyd and vintage Alan Grant.”
- Pipedream Comics

The Biodegradable apocalypse!

As a new year slithers purposefully towards us, the time of the Biodegradable apocalypse is at hand!

Issue 22, due out in September 2018, will be the last planned issue of 100% Biodegradable...but we'll be going out with a bang!  In fact, issues 20 to 22 have had to have their page count expanded (but not their price) just so we can fit all the carnage in.  There'll be classic strips from the likes of Alan Burrows, Alan Grant, Ian Edginton and many of our regulars, such as Brett Burbridge, Dave Thomson and Tony Suleri.

With such quality contributions on the cards, why is 100% Biodegradable ending, you might ask.  Well, it was always my intention to aim for the 5 year mark, and with issue 22 I'll have achieved just that.  Much as I'd love to keep the comic going, editing 100% Biodegradable is ridiculously time consuming and I rarely have a moment spare to get any writing done.  As well as the next Death Duty and Skowdogs series, I have several novels to finish off, more sitcoms to write, and various other comic mini-series to plan and release.

So, 2018 will be the year the comic beast died...though there's nothing to stop 100% Biodegradable crawling back out of its grave at some point in the future, once I've cleared my schedule a bit (after all, you can't keep a good undead hell-beast down).

To all the creators, readers, and reviewers who've supported 100% Biodegradable over the last 4 years, you have my deepest gratitude.  You have helped make it a comic that I'm extremely proud of, and I look forward to actually having the time to re-read past issues without the next issue's deadline looming on the horizon.

Before I sign off for the year, here's a preview of some of the strips appearing in 100% Biodegradable's last three issues.  As you'll see, there's still plenty to look forward to.

- Dave Hailwood

Funguys by Alan Grant and Alan Burrows

Time Waits by David Hailwood, Gary O' Donnell and Anne-Marie Webb

Rumblebot Rampage by Tim West and Edward R. Norden

Wrap around Rourke

With issue 17 of 100% Biodegradable preparing to slither out of the cracks between worlds and emerge into the light, here's a quick peek at the lovely wrap around 'Rourke Of The Radlands' cover by Bill Storie and Brett Burbridge.

Originally created by John Freeman (Judge Dredd Megazine, Crucible) and Liam Sharp (Batman, Wonder Woman) for Marvel UK's 'Strip' comic in the 90's, Rourke proved so popular that there was even talk of doing a mini-series featuring popular characters from the Marvel universe.

Liam Sharp's faxes, featuring Rourke, Monark Starstalker and Wolverine.
Sadly Marvel UK ceased to be before that could happen, though the original Rourke strip was reprinted in Issue 16 of 100% Biodegradable, after a brand new lick of paint from Brett Burbridge.

You can read more about the history of Rourke and Marvel UK on John Freeman's Down The Tubes.

Issue 17 of 100% Biodegradable features Rourke's first brand new solo outing in over 20 years, ably illustrated by Bill Storie (Spaceship Away, Sci Fi Art Now), scripted by David Hailwood and John Freeman, coloured by Brett Burbridge and lettered by Ken Reynolds.

The new issue will be available later today, so keep your eyes peeled!

More Issue 14 sneak peeks!

Well, since Issue 14 is mere hours away from completion, here's a peek at some of the other strips appearing inside.

From Andre Mateus and Tony Suleri there's 'Old Bill' - an ageing detective who's struggling to remain useful in a technologically advanced society.

Then there's Last Breath by David Hailwood, Dave Snell and Ken Reynolds, in which even the stars provide no escape from a persistent zombie outbreak.

And rounding off the issue, there's the final instalment of John Freeman and David Hailwood's Death Duty series, ably illustrated by Brett Burbridge, and lettered by Ken Reynolds.

There'll be more news on the series that'll be replacing Death Duty coming soon, so stay tuned! (or, er, pop back later)
