Issue 7 Out Now!

Issue 7 of 100% Biodegradable is now available to buy on Comicsy or Drivethru for a mere 69p!

Along with your usual smattering of brain munching goblins, boneheaded barbarians and delusional psychiatric patients, Issue 7 of the 100% Biodegradable anthology features a new ongoing series - Death Duty, by John Freeman (Dr Who Magazine, Judge Dredd Megazine, Crucible) and Alan Burrows (2000ad, Starblazer, Commando).

'In a war-torn future, crime and disloyalty to the Terran Empire are punished with conscription into mercenary law enforcement squads: soldiers consigned to do or die in order to prove their commitment to the common good.  The average life expectancy for a recruit is four months, hence the street slang for the job: Death Duty.

Dissidents in the Terran Empire are put on the infamous "List" - tracked down by Death Duty squads and terminated for their rebellion with extreme prejudice.  For most of the Dutymen, exactly who they kill doesn't matter - until one of their number, Travis Wilson, begins to question the missions they're assigned and goes AWOL - a wanted man.'

Death Duty also features the character 'Rourke', created by John Freeman and Liam Sharp (2000ad, X-Men, Batman) for use in the pages of Marvel UK's Strip comic, more than 20 years ago.

Here's some previews of what you'll find inside this 30 page anthology.

First up, some blood drenched blackly comic mayhem from Jimmy Furlong (Something Wicked, Spod! Oddities From Space) and Andrew Hartmann (Futurequake, Seqapunch Quarterly) in the form of Gremian The Machine Elf

Next, we unravel the misfortunes of one lone space traveller in Happier Times, by Chris Redfern (Futurequake, Zarjaz) and JT Pegg (2000ad, Judge Dredd Megazine).

And of course where would life be without a little monkey magic from Tony SuleriDavid Hailwood,  and Ken Reynolds with Pubba Gintaro in: A Date With Death!

Enough waffle - go forth and check out the comic at the links at the top of the page.  If you're going to buy Biodegradable, I'd advise doing so before January 1st, as there's a new VATMOSS EU law that may cause many digital businesses to fold due to the impossibility to comply (our comic will continue, but some of its outlets may be forced to close or raise prices).

Issue 7 Contents

Here's a quick sneak preview of the fantastic Death Duty cover for Issue 7 of 100% Biodegradable (art by Alan Burrows, with colours by Brett Burbridge, Death Duty logo by Ken Reynolds and design by John Kirkham).

And here's a look at the contents page (featuring art by Stewart Moore).

There's at least three 2000ad creators with work inside, along with many popular creators from the indie comics scene (and all at the highly reasonable price of 69p!).  The issue will be out later today, so watch this space (or, er, do something else in the meantime.  Compose a sonnet, hug a monkey or eat a bag of chips perhaps?)

100% Biodegradable available on Comixology

Issue 1 of 100% Biodegradable is now available to buy on Comixology!  Issues 2 and 3 have also been accepted and processed, so it shouldn't be long before they're available as well.

Thanks to Comixology's Guided View technology, you should be able to read the comic on smaller devices such as Mobile Phones (I've tested Guided View on my ipad with a complimentary copy that Comixology sent me, and it works very nicely indeed).

So if you haven't already brought yourself a copy of the first issue, now is a jolly nice time to do so (all support is greatly appreciated!).

I'm hoping to do a write-up on the whole Comixology process soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

Issue 2 - Cover Story

Before I move on to showing previews of strips coming up in Issue 3 (due out in March), I thought it might be nice to show the process behind the cover design for Issue 2 (by Tony Suleri and John Kirkham).

Tony first split the background and foreground into separate elements, choosing to paint one element at a time.
In the image above, background colours have been added.
Next, Tony concentrated on the main figures in the foreground.

Both images were then composited, and Tony experimented with various filters (in the illustration above, he used a Watercolour filter)
Finally, the cover image was passed on to John Kirkham, who handles the graphic design for 100% Biodegradable as well as Assistant Editor duties.  John altered the colouring, making the background a darker blue so as to accentuate the foreground characters and action, performed various other touch ups and added the logos.

And there you have it...one bloomin' lovely looking cover!

Keep your eyes peeled for Issue 3's cover, which is illustrated by the marvelous Carl Yonder.

A hearty welcome!

Well hello there, my inquisitive compadres!

Welcome to the brand new blog for Biomekazoik Developments - home to the 100% Biodegradable comics anthology, and the free online board game 'Board Horde'.

As time goes on I'll be using this blog to bring attention to upcoming strips in the anthology, highlight the works of various creators and give a behind the scenes look at the art, writing and editing process.  And maybe, just maybe, I'll one day do an update for that pesky online board game of mine!

Currently the anthology has only been out for two months now, and we've already had masses of high quality submissions - some from newcomers, and others from seasoned pros (the web links to the right should give you an idea of some of the creators whose work will be appearing inside future issues).

If you happen to be a comic writer or artist who would like to get involved, then we're looking for 1-6 page self contained strips of a sci-fi/fantasy/horror/adventure nature.  Preferably completed strips, though if you're a great artist looking for a writer or a great writer looking for an artist we may be able to pair you up with someone if your work is what we're after.  Feel free to email us at: biomekazoik[at]gmail.com for more information.

I'd just like to say huge thanks to John Kirkham for doing such a marvelous job on the graphic design work for the covers and contents pages (and all the joyous admin work!), and to all the creators who have submitted work so far.  The generosity of some of the professional creators who've taken time out of their busy schedules to rifle through their back catalogue of work at the insane whim of a bespectacled beard-sporting editor has been truly astounding.  Cheers, chaps!  That bar tab at the next comic convention I attend may bankrupt me, as it's growing with every favour...

Anyway, must get back to planning issue 3 (due out mid-March).  Stay tuned as there's fun times ahead, people!

- David Hailwood (editor of 100% Biodegradable)
